Cheryl Baker

TV Presenter

This real life Eastender, who was born in Bethnal Green on 8th March 1954, seems tireless. Her bubbly personality was evident even in the early days of “Bucks Fizz” when they won the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin in 1981. They went on to gain world-wide recognition with a string of hit records including three number ones, “Land of Make Believe”, “My camera Never Lies” and of course “Making Your Mind Up” and throughout this period, it was evident that Cheryl would develop a solo career. From 1984 her popularity as a solo artiste together with her work with Bucks Fizz meant that the demands on her time often found her working eighteen hours a day.

So at the end of 1993, Cheryl stepped down from Bucks Fizz after twelve years to concentrate on her solo career. (See attached credit list.) She is loved and respected by the British public who think of her as ‘the girl next door’. Her popularity was recognised in 1998 when she was awarded the big red book by Michael Aspel on ‘This Is Your Life’.

Cheryl lives in Kent with her bass-guitarist husband Steve Stroud and their nine-year-old twin daughters, Kyla and Natalie.

2003 (up to June)

This year kicked off as busy as ever. Following the box-office success of ‘Anybody For Murder’, Cheryl was asked to tour with the play once again, selling out in most venues. Comic Relief used Cheryl’s well-recognised face and name in one of their advertising campaigns: “No Mr. Kipling, I asked for six Cherry Bakewells, not six Cheryl Bakers!” There was once again the myriad of TV appearances and media interviews to coincide with Eurovision and Cheryl was awarded a framed cover of The Guinness Book of Hit Singles in recognition of her success with Bucks Fizz. Her appearance on ‘Drop The Celebrity’, due to be televised on 28th June, caused quite a furore when she landed badly, breaking her ankle in the process! Watch the programme to see how she fared! She is shortly to appear in another celebrity ‘Weakest Link’, yet another tour with the highly successful ‘Anybody For Murder?’ and will be starring as Aladdin in her home-town, Sevenoaks, this Christmas.

2002

Following the success of her starring role as ‘The Enchantress’ in ‘Jack And The Beanstalk’ at Aylesbury, Cheryl and husband Steve celebrated their 10th anniversary with a renewal of their marriage vows, a fab party and a week in Barbados, all of which were recorded in OK magazine. Not a bad start to the year! In February Cheryl was back with the Travel Channel, this time to the Canary Islands and did a further filming trip to the Cote d’Azur in May. She presented their ‘Viewers Poll’ programme, and went filming in Mexico for Travel Bug.

She hosted ‘Open House’ twice whilst Gloria Hunniford was on holiday and appeared in several TB shows including ‘DIY Disasters’, ‘Stupid Punts’, ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’ and ‘The Weakest Link Celebrity Special’.

This year saw her serious acting debut with a series of plays, ‘Dial M For Murder’, ‘Mixed Feelings’, and ‘Anybody For Murder?’

Cheryl lives in Kent with her bass-guitarist husband Steve and their nine-year-old twin daughters, Kyla and Natalie.
