Zane Scotland Second Youngest Golfer ever to qualify for The British Open Zane's interest in golf started when he was only 10 years old. Due to his dedication, he achieved a handicap of 8 by the time he was 12 Years old.
During these two years he had taken part in numerous competitions, mainly senior and was the proud owner of 13 trophies. At this time, he was entered for a sports Scholarship, which was held by MACE. This group recognise that children in all sports throughout the UK should be encouraged and they stage a one week scholarship at Eton College every year, giving intensive coaching in a number of sports including golf. Zane was one of twelve to be selected in his sport.
In the same year he was entered by his school for The Surrey Schools Championships, which he won. His determination has continued and in 1996 he was the winner of The Surrey Under 14's Trophy and after this he was chosen for the Surrey's A's team.
This is usually a side manned by senior players and it was stated in Amateur Golf Magazine in June of that year, that Zane was the youngest ever player to play for this team. Also in that year, he was selected by Surrey Juniors and the Surrey Schools team. In the winter of 1996 he attended his first England Winter Coaching Scheme. By 1997 he excelled to achieve a scratch handicap and he was chosen for the England under16's team. His England winter coaching continued through 1997 and 1998 and in March of this year, 98, he was invited to attend the England School of Excellence at Woodhall Spa, headquarters of the English Golf Union. This consisted of the top 21 under 18 boys in the country, and Zane is the lowest handicapped 15 year old.
Zane had already achieved the title of Surrey Under 16's and Surrey Under 18's Champion, in 1998. This year 1999, Zane was the second youngest golfer this Century to qualify for The British Open. Zane did remarkably well in the tournament, but he didn't win.
