Mike Reid

The Late Mike Reid

MIKE REID

1940 - 2007

Sadly, Mike passed away suddenly on Sunday 29th July 2007 in Spain from a Heart Attack.  Mike wasn't just a client of ours, he was a very very good friend. Mike's funeral was held back here in The UK on Tuesday 14th August at Little Easton Church, Little Easton, Nr. Dunmow, Essex. It was a lovely send off for a very very great man and entertainer. May his dear soul rest in peace. We're going to miss him terribly.

Mike's last TV programme he did was called "The Baron" for ITV where three celebrities went to a little town in Scotland called Gardenstown where they competed for the title of Baron Of Troup. Mike won the title. One of Mike's last wishes was to build a youth centre there. If you would like to make a donation for this very worthy cause, please send Cheques or postal orders made payable to Celeb Agents and send them to 77 Oxford Street, London W1D 2ES where we will pass every penny received on to Mike's widow Shirley, to help build this project that Mike so dearly wanted.

In the 1960s he worked as a stand-up comedian in clubs and aboard cruise liners. He then worked as a film and television extra appearing in unaccredited roles in ‘Doctor Who’, ‘The Champions’ and ‘Department S’. He was a stunt driver in the films ‘Casino Royale’ (1967), ‘Up the Junction’ (1967) and ‘The Dirty Dozen’ (1967) Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

He was one of the original stars of ‘The Comedians’, a popular TV series of the 1970s that was produced by Johnnie Hamp for Granada Television. It consisted entirely of short slots by mature stand-up comedians. Mike capitalised on his initial success with a one-off hit record, a novelty version of The Ugly Duckling. In the late 1970s he was host of the ITV children’s TV quiz show ‘Runaround’, fondly remembered for its incomprehensible rules and the incongruity of Mike Reid as presenter.

Then in the 1980s, he gained much popularity as Frank Butcher in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. He joined the show in 1987 and in 1994 he took a long hiatus after he was under stress from the depression storyline that his character Frank Butcher was under. He returned in late 1995 but only a few months. He later took another lengthy break as he became stressed again as the schedule at Eastenders is somewhat gruelling to say the least. He returned full time in December 1997 and remained on the show until 2000 when he announced that he was leaving permanently. In the same year he appeared in the very popular gangster movie ‘Snatch’, which was directed by Guy Ritchie.

He was then persuaded to return as Frank Butcher for a guest stint in January 2002 and a spin-off special titled ‘Perfectly Frank’ in 2003.

However, he made yet another comeback to EastEnders, in early December 2005, for another week’s stint, but made it clear on ‘The Paul O'Grady Show’ that it would be for the final time as it gave Frank closure to his relationship with Pat. However, it has been reported in the National Newspapers that the BBC are to make yet another approach for Mike to go back to the show to give the viewing public back one of their all time favourite characters Frank Butcher.
