Roger established the linear relationship of cat home ranges and density. He has travelled extensively, observing cats in over 25 countries around the world. He was the first biologist to monitor the effects of neutering a colony of feral cats to keep it on site, and has been strongly involved over the last few years with its application in the USA, and is Scientific Adviser to the USA’s national organisation for feral cats, Alley Cat Allies. Roger Tabor has the distinction of having the most books by a single author in Desmond Morris’ definitive “100 Best Cat Books” list. He is a keen photographer, and took most of the pictures in his cat and herb books, and has an extensive library of location cat and herb pictures.

In addition to his work on cats, he invented ‘motorway verge ecology’ by co-convening the landmark conference ‘Motorways and the Biologist’ and editing the proceedings. It was Roger’s study of the effect of road vibrations on earthworks causing them to surface and be exploited by birds that first propelled him onto television on the BBC’s ‘Animal Magic’. He has also published work on hedgehogs, wood mice, etc. He has had a lifelong involvement with herbs and botany, and grew at his former historic watermill herbs, wild and cultivated, managed his own 5 acre nature reserve. He now grows a range of herbs at his present home, a georgian ex-vicorage on the Essex coast. Roger is Chairman and Vice-president of The British Naturalists’ Association, the national body for naturalists in the UK.

Roger is also Scientific Advisor & past Chairman of The Herb Society. His book “ALL ABOUT HERBS” marked the 75th Anniversary of the Herb Society. He designed the National Herb Society’s herb garden at their headquarters at historic Sulgrave Manor. He has lectured on plant identification and uses, linked to social history for over 25 years. He is a Chartered Biologist, Member of the Institute of Biology, a Master of Philosophy and a Fellow of the Linnean Society. In addition to his ecological work he has a biochemical laboratory-based training. He carried out research on the enzyme function and microscopic structural integrity of brain cells and blood vessels using biochemical and transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques on strokes in people. He produced papers on chromatographic techniques.

He has received heritage awards in recognition of the restoration of his former watermill home, and he and it are featured in the book ‘The Mill’s Life’ by Charles Llewelyn (Robson Books). With his wide range of activities, biologist, botanist, behaviourist, historian, biochemist, writer, TV and radio broadcaster, TV producer/director and photographer, Roger Tabor has been described as a polymath, yet in essence he is the TV CATMAN, HERBMAN AND NATURALIST.
